Sigiriya

Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka. Rising 200 meters above the surrounding plains, it was built in the 5th century by King Kasyapa as a royal palace and later served as a Buddhist monastery.

Famed for its dramatic setting, Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features impressive frescoes, landscaped gardens, and a massive lion-shaped gateway carved into the rock. The summit offers panoramic views and insights into ancient urban planning, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic and historically significant landmarks.
